What was ruling him?
The sermon slide calls him “the poor young slave.” That is not the Bible’s name for him. It means he owned great wealth, yet he was not free to release it. His possessions had become his heart’s master.
The young man began by asking about a good deed. He thought eternal life could be gained with the right score. Jesus did not hand him an easy point. He revealed the place where the man would not let God be first.

👐 Open hands, not a perfect scorecard
Just before this, parents brought little children to Jesus (Matthew 19:13–15). They had no status to boast about and nothing with which to pay—they simply came. The rich young man came with achievements and hands full of treasure, asking what else he could do. This does not mean children are sinless. It shows how God’s kingdom is received: as Jesus’ gift, not a prize we earn.
